About...

Born in Derbyshire; brought up in Cheshire in a non-musical family Ian was an only child with no elder siblings to help colour his musical pallet. With no outside influences or preconceived ideas he devoured everything from soul to rock…the O’Jays to Springsteen and everything in between. Lyrics were important…and remain so to this day; he still loves the vivid images described by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Neil Finn and Bernie Taupin.

Ian’s first band was an all originals outfit based in Manchester, he was lead singer and contributed the majority of the lyrical content of the songs. I guess in today’s genre heavy music scene they could have been described as broadly indie-pop. Catchy tunes with lyric and melodic hooks to grab the listeners attention.

Then ‘life’ got in the way, as it does for so many and any idea of perusing a career in music pretty much disappeared. For a short period Ian played in a couple of covers bands 'just for fun' but that was it.

Now decades later living in Lincolnshire, it was only by chance (and the pandemic) the musical ball got rolling again. Out of the blue Ian was contacted by one of the members of the original band; together they tracked down other former members and support team from back in the day. During a video call, Ian was asked if he was still writing original material, the answer was ‘No…not for the last forty years’.

With time on his hands Ian started writing again, setting himself a challenge to write a song a week for a whole year. Now, not everything written during that period could be described as ‘good’ and certainly not good enough to be set free into the world, but once the creative juices began to flow and the dirty water from the creative tap began to clear, he had a few decent songs.

Those tentative beginnings have expanded somewhat and Ian released his debut solo album ‘Head Full Of Thunder’ in 2025. An album of self penned originals. Ian’s style has been described by one of his peers as ‘Dark Acoustic Pop’, but this particular album is a fully ‘produced’ piece of work…less acoustic…more full band; and a subtle mix of country, blues and Americana rather than out and out pop.

Ian’s vocal style has been likened to that of Gerry Rafferty, Jon Allen, even Bryan Adams, (and others of a similar style)…but softer with a slightly ‘raspy’ edge. Everyone hears something different so it will be up to you, the listener to decide if those comparisons are accurate or not.
